Espaces des Arts, 9 Ste-Catherine Street E, 2e étage, Montréal

This event will serve to shed light on the history and context for one of the most popular dances currently, salsa. Taught by Gabrielle Jacob, a current PhD student in the department, the salsa dance class will include the Afro-Cuban origins of salsa and a basic class on one of the styles of salsa, Salsa on2, created in New York City.

In his lecture, Determining new international and domestic orders: reflections on Modern Canada's endurance and more so resilience as Black and West Indian, Dr. Cecil Foster offers the argument that from even its earliest days as a settler colony, Canada was inherently Black and that to this day its social justice model of development based on ideals of diversity, equity and inclusiveness reflects Canada's undeniable historical, cultural and Black British West Indian heritage.Presented by91˿Ƶ Institute for the Study of Canada, the lecture will be followed by a Q&A and reception.

The Black Law Student Association of 91˿Ƶ and the Women of Colour Collective at the 91˿Ƶ Faculty of Law are excited to host The Honourable Love Saint-Fleur, a Federal Court of Appeal judge appointed to the Federal Court of Canada in 2024. Her distinguished background spans international law, human rights, and refugee protection, including work with the United Nations and Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board. The discussion, followed by a Q&A with the audience, will take place from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m in the Moot Court. We will also host a cocktail hour with light refreshments and snacks from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the atrium.

Son parcours remarquable couvre le droit international, les droits de la personne et la protection des réfugiés, notamment à travers son travail avec les Nations Unies et la Commission de l’immigration et du statut de réfugié du Canada. Join the screening and discussion with the director of Stefan Verna’s documentary Night Watches Us, a poignant cinematic exploration of the tragic death of Nicholas Gibbs, a 24-year-old Black Montreal man who fell victim to police brutality while grappling with mental health issues and psychosis. Through community accounts and intimate conversations with Gibbs’ loved ones—his mother, his youngest son and his nephew—Night Watches Us delves into the profound impact of systemic racism and injustice. It captures the collective grief that follows, incorporating various cinematic styles, eye-witness footage and documentary interviews. A poetic blend of music, dance and spoken word brings Nicholas and his family’s desire for justice to life on screen. Presented by the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, with support from the Yan P. Lin Centre (RGDST).
