Emerging Spores: Why to be serious about Bacillus cereus

Bacillus cereus is involved in the industrialized world in foodborne diseases as well as in invasive infections such as fatal bacteremia and a form of pneumonia remarkably similar to inhalation anthrax. Changing life styles, increased life expectancy and new eating habits have combined to increase the incidence of B. cereus infections. The emetic type of the disease is attributed to the heat-stable depsipeptide cereulide, while different heat-labile enterotoxins are the causative agents for the diarrhoeal syndrome. The spectrum of potential B. cereus toxicity ranges from strains used as probiotics in animal feed to highly toxic strains already reported responsible for fatalities. Our recently established multiplex PCR assay for toxin gene profiling indicates the progressive emergence of pathotypes with novel toxin gene profiles. To develop effective countermeasures and proper diagnostic tools, an understanding of the pathogenesis and epidemiology of this versatile pathogen is essential. We combined genetic and transcriptional studies with a proteome based approach to gain insights into the regulatory networks governing toxin synthesis of B. cereus. Ongoing studies show that B. cereus toxicity is influenced by complex interactions of various intrinsic as well as extrinsic factors, which remain to be clarified in detail.
