 ing life styles\, increased life expectancy\nand new eating habits have co
 mbined to increase the incidence of\nB. cereus infections. The emetic type
  of the disease is\nattributed to the heat-stable depsipeptide cereulide\,
  while\ndifferent heat-labile enterotoxins are the causative agents for th
 e\ndiarrhoeal syndrome. The spectrum of potential B. cereus\ntoxicity rang
 es from strains used as probiotics in animal feed to\nhighly toxic strains
  already reported responsible for fatalities.\nOur recently established mu
 ltiplex PCR assay for toxin gene\nprofiling indicates the progressive emer
 gence of pathotypes with\nnovel toxin gene profiles. To develop effective 
 countermeasures and\nproper diagnostic tools\, an understanding of the pat
 hogenesis and\nepidemiology of this versatile pathogen is essential. We co
 mbined\ngenetic and transcriptional studies with a proteome based approach
 \nto gain insights into the regulatory networks governing toxin\nsynthesis
  of B. cereus. Ongoing studies show that B.\ncereus toxicity is influenced
  by complex interactions of\nvarious intrinsic as well as extrinsic factor
 s\, which remain to be\nclarified in detail.\n
