Presented annually, the Leo Yaffe Award for Excellence in Teaching celebrates a faculty member for superior teaching at the undergraduate level within the Faculty of Science.

Jasmin Chahal is a powerhouse of pedagogical innovation and student advocacy. An Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, she is known for her infectious enthusiasm and deep empathy, and has transformed the learning experience for thousands of students. Professor Chahal masterfully balances academic rigor with a personal touch, drawing on her own journey as a 91˿Ƶ undergraduate to make even the most complex concepts accessible and welcoming.

In the classroom, she utilizes interactive tools like Slido and think-pair-share activities to keep students engaged and inspired. Her impact extends to the lab, where she has revolutionized the curriculum with stepby-step video tutorials and semester-long team projects that spark a genuine passion for scientific discovery. Students describe her as a mentor who is “always, always there,” whether providing academic clarity or emotional support. Her dedication is reflected in her consistent “Best Professor” awards and the standing ovations that conclude her courses.

In recognition of her unwavering commitment to excellence and her profound impact on the student community, the Faculty of Science is proud to present the 2026 Leo Yaffe Award for Excellence in Teaching to Professor Jasmin Chahal.
