As a COMPASS mentor, you help create a more supportive and connected graduate community by sharing your experiences, perspectives, and practical knowledge. A single conversation can help a student navigate uncertainty, gain confidence, or identify resources and opportunities they may not have discovered otherwise.聽聽

How COMPASS Works聽

COMPASS is designed to be flexible and low commitment.聽

As a mentor, you will:聽

• Decide which topics you are comfortable discussing.聽

• Be included in the searchable mentor directory.聽

• Respond to students who contact you directly through the program.聽

• Participate at a level that fits your availability and interests.聽

There are no required meeting frequencies, formal matching processes, or long-term commitments. Some mentoring relationships may involve a single conversation, while others may develop over time.聽聽

The Role of a COMPASS Mentor

COMPASS mentors are not supervisors, advisors, or counsellors. Instead, they serve as experienced voices who can offer insights based on personal and professional precedent.

Mentors may support students by:

• Sharing experiences related to graduate education, careers, or professional development

• Helping students navigate institutional systems and academic culture

• Discussing identity, language, or life experiences that may affect graduate education

• Connecting students with relevant resources and opportunities

• Offering encouragement, perspective, and informal guidance

Because the program is topic-based rather than discipline-based, mentorship conversations can focus on the issues that matter most to individual students. Mentors are invited to share their experiences, perspectives, and areas of expertise through the mentor registration process. Once registered, your profile will be added to the COMPASS directory, where students can discover and connect with you based on shared interests and mentorship topics.聽聽
