Summer Institute In Qualitative Methods In Health Research

This two-day workshop provides an introduction to qualitative research in health sciences. It is designed for participants interested in learning the fundamentals of the qualitative approach and offers the opportunity to develop hands-on skills in conducting qualitative interviews and analysis.

The workshop covers key concepts underlying qualitative research, including philosophical paradigms, observation methods, principles of interviewing, and qualitative thematic analysis.

Morning sessions will feature hybrid interactive lectures with a focus on core concepts and examples. Afternoon sessions are reserved for in-person participants and provide hands-on experience through guided exercises and group work.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will understand:

  1. What qualitative research is, and why it matters
  2. What qualitative observation methods are
  3. How to design a qualitative study
  4. How to design interview and focus group guides
  5. How to conduct qualitative thematic analysis
  6. How to use the MaxQDA software for analysis (in-person participants only)

Audience

All health researchers interested in qualitative methods will benefit from this workshop. It is open to anyone with a background in research methodology who is interested in developing the skills needed to understand, design and carry out qualitative research, including:

  • academics;
  • graduate students;
  • postdoctoral trainees;
  • clinicians.

Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ

Profile Picture of Homa FathiHoma Fathi is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ. Her work sits at the intersection of decolonization in dentistry, person-centered and social dentistry approaches, equitable access to care for people with diverse disabilities, and transformative dental education.

Over the past six years, she has published six peer-reviewed qualitative studies, with an additional manuscript currently under review. Her PhD research, grounded in a rigorous grounded theory methodology, was awarded the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship in 2024. She has also completed nine graduate-level credits focused specifically on qualitative research methodologies, reflecting her strong commitment to methodological excellence.

This will be Homa’s third time teaching the Qualitative Research workshop at the Summer Institute.

Alissa Levine, PhD
Assistant Professor, Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ

Alissa Levine is a sociologist (PhD, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ) who has contributed her qualitative methodological expertise to teaching and research projects with a focus on the health of marginalized groups, as well as on the curriculum, which includes teaching, research, and program development. Her narrative approach to in-depth interviewing also draws from her background in language and literary studies (MA, Université du Québec à Montréal). Affiliated with the Population Oral Health Research cluster, Levine currently directs the MSc Dental Sciences Non-Thesis program. Alissa Levine is accepting graduate students.

Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ

Charo Rodríguez completed her studies in Medicine (MDCM) at the University of Alicante, Spain, in 1983. She holds a Master's in Health Economics and Management of Health Care Services (University of Alicante, 1991), an MSc in Public Health - Management Option (University of Valencia, 1992), and a PhD in Public Health - Health Care Organization Option (University of Montreal, 2001). After a CIHR-awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Faculties of Medicine and Management at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ, she was appointed at the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ Department of Family Medicine in 2003, where she currently is a Professor.

Dr. Rodríguez’s research program includes two main streams: organizational studies in healthcare organizations and medical education. She was awarded Research Scholar by the Fonds de recherche du Quebec en santé (FRQS) from 2004 to 2016. She was also awarded the 2013-2014 Cruess Faculty Scholarship in Medical Education. Since 2015, she is Director of the Family Medicine Educational Research Group (FMER), and Director of the MSc in Family Medicine, Medical Education Option.

Dr. Rodríguez regularly teaches graduate courses, seminars and workshops in qualitative methodologies in health. She was included in the Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Honor List for Educational Excellence in spring 2015.
