On March 27, 91˿Ƶ honoured 141 laureates at the 20th annual, celebrating researchers who received prestigious provincial, national or international awards in 2024, including eight researchers in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

In his opening remarks, 91˿Ƶ President and Vice-Chancellor, Deep Saini, applauded the honourees for their efforts, underlining the importance of 91˿Ƶ’s research contributions.

Congratulations to Jérôme Waldispühl and Attila Szantner (Computer Science), The Eclipse Task Force (Physics), and Andrew Gonzalez (Biology), who are among this year's winners of the President’s Prize for Public Engagement through Media!

In announcing the winners and runners-up, President and Vice-Chancellor Deep Saini noted that they were among a strong field of applicants spanning all 12 Faculties.

“This is further evidence that the sharing of knowledge and a love of learning are core 91˿Ƶ values,” he said.

Last week, HBHL hosted the third talk of the 2024-2025 Neurogenesis Speaker Series at the Neuro, featuring Dana Small and Yashar Zeighami.

Dana Small’s presentation,"The Interoceptive Origins of Reward," explored how biological signals are integrated to determine food choice, while Yashar Zeighami’s talk, "Fine-Tuning Neuroimaging Analysis to Reveal Hidden Insights,"highlighted his research into the development of multi-scale computational models of brain anatomy.

Universities are typically organized into silos – engineering, business, medicine – but sustainability requires collaboration across these fields. “For example, solar energy involves policy, engineering, business,” says Juan Camilo Serpa, an Associate Professor at 91˿Ƶ Desautels.” To foster cross-disciplinary collaboration among sustainability researchers, Serpa created the Sustainability Action Network—or SUSAN for short.

When OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022, the hype around AI began building to a fever pitch. Big money poured in to big tech, sending the stock of companies like Microsoft and Nvidia soaring. But a December 2024 AI chatbot release from a much smaller Chinese tech firm is showing that generative AI can be built a much more modest budget. “Deepseek shows that smaller companies with more limited resources can compete with tech giants,” Prof. Ruslan Goyenko told Benefits Canada.

The federal election campaign is well underway, and the leaders of the Liberal and Conservative parties are both proposing tax cuts for the lowest income tax bracket. Income up to $57,375 is currently taxed at a rate of 15%, and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has proposed a 2.25% reduction to this rate. For his part, Liberal leader Mark Carney is proposing a 1% reduction. In either case, the tax savings do not just benefit the lowest income earners. Anyone who earns more the personal deduction amount -- $15,705 in 2024-- would save money on their taxes.

UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development in India (MGIEP) recently hosted Faculty of Education Dean, Vivek Venkatesh, and Professor Joseph Levitan, DISE, for a dialogue on community based participatory action research, and pluralism and polarization.

Their visit was part of a research tour including a dialogue on these topics to foster collaboration and to exchange ideas on education and societal challenges.
