Michael Merson - SPGH IAB Board Member

Portrait of Michael MersonMichael Merson, M.D. is founding Chair and Professor of Global and Environmental Health at New York University School of Global Public Health. He is the William Joklik Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Global Health at Duke University, where he served as the founding director of the Duke Global Health Institute, Vice President and Vice Provost for Global Affairs and Vice Chancellor for Duke-National University of Singapore Affairs. Prior to this he was the Anna Lauder Professor of Public Health at Yale University and its first Dean of Public Health. Before entering academia Dr. Merson served as director of three global programs at the World Health Organization in Geneva.

Dr. Merson has authored over 180 articles, is senior editor of the textbook “Global Health: Disease, Programs, Systems, and Policies” and co-author of The AIDS Pandemic: Searching for a Global Response. His research interests are identifying ways to increase access to new vaccines and treatments in low and middle countries and designing new approaches to global health governance and financing. He has served in advisory capacities for many international organizations and private sector entities. He has two honorary degrees and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
