Application for instructors

Want to bring more engagement and peer support to your large Science Course? The Faculty of Science Peer Mentoring Program allows instructors of 100- and 200-level courses to apply for peer mentors and once approved, appoint senior undergraduates as mentors.听听听

Award:听$400 for 25/30 hours per term鈥�

Availability of awards听听

On average, we听are able to听fund up to one peer mentor for every 100 students enrolled in a course. If you feel your course would听benefit听from听additional听peer mentors, let us know in Question 5鈥痮f the application form.鈥�

Selection Process听

Requests will be evaluated by the Office of Science Education (OSE), based on these criteria:听

  • The course is a 100- or 200-level Science course with an enrolment of 150 or more students.听

  • The application form is fully completed.听

After reviewing all the听applications,听we will assess what is possible within our budget. We will then follow up to confirm how many peer mentors can be provided for your course.听

Deadlines and important dates for Fall 2026:鈥�鈥�

  • May 25, 2026:听Deadline for submission of applications by instructors.听

  • June 18, 2026:听Date by which OSE will inform instructors whether their application is approved, and if so, how many peer mentors they will be awarded.鈥��

  • August 27, 2026:听Deadline for instructors whose requests are approved to听submit听peer mentor鈥痭ames (a separate form will be provided for this submission).鈥�

N.B. Please note that the Peer mentor awards cannot be combined with other funding to form a salary.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for peer mentors, instructors must:

  • Teach鈥痑 Science course
    At this time, the Faculty of Science Peer Mentoring Program is only available for Science courses.
  • Teach鈥痑n introductory course
    Your course should be at the 100 or 200 level (300 and 400 level courses are no longer included).
  • Large class size
    The course should have 150 or more students enrolled (as listed on Minerva).
  • Stay鈥痗onnected with your peer mentors
    As the instructor, you will be expected to stay engaged with your peer mentors throughout the term. This includes:
  1. Give your peer mentors an orientation at the beginning of the term to go over expectations and their role.
  2. Check鈥痠n regularly to offer support and make鈥痵ure everything is on track.
  3. At the end of the term, take some time to reflect on the experience together鈥攖his could be through a survey, a casual debrief or even a social event.鈥�

Selecting students

To be a peer mentor students must meet these criteria:

  • Be a current 91丝瓜视频 undergraduate student鈥�听
    Peer mentors must be registered as 91丝瓜视频 undergraduate students and remain registered throughout the semester in which they receive the Award.鈥�听

  • Have completed the course or lab they are mentoring鈥�听
    This ensures they are familiar with the material and can confidently support others.鈥�听

  • One award per course per semester鈥�听
    Students can only receive one Faculty of Science Peer Mentoring award for each course听in a given听semester.鈥�听

Sample activities

Examples of activities peer mentors can perform:

  • Attend lectures and support鈥痠n-class activities that involve interaction with a course鈥檚 students.听

  • Respond 鈥痶o student emails听regarding听course content and post鈥痲uestions and answers on discussion boards.听

  • Co-facilitate鈥� tutorials and pre-exam review sessions (generally best听when supervised by an instructor or TA).听

  • Participate in study groups to听assist听peers with developing effective study methods and approaches to learning course content.听

  • Participate鈥痠n training offered by the instructor, the Department, or Faculty related to the Peer Mentoring Program experience.听

Examples of activities peer mentors cannot perform:听

  • Grading of assessments.鈥�听

  • Invigilating鈥� quizzes and exams.鈥��听

  • Reviewing鈥� assessments.听
