Pow-wow to transform lower campus

Daylong event celebrates aboriginal culture

91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ and First Peoples' House proudly present the Fifth Annual Pow-wow concert and education day, celebrating the art and culture of indigenous peoples, on Thursday, September 21.

91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ's lower campus will be adorned with teepees, drums, native kiosks and education circles for five of 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ's faculties; nursing, social work, law, medicine and education. These circles will provide information sessions for prospective students. The daylong event will also feature traditional dances, native-made crafts, hoop dancing demonstrations and a fashion show. Free concerts featuring Hopi reggae star Casper Loymayesva, local artists DJ Nycness, Kahnawake's Souled and Andean supergroup Colores Andinos will round out the festivities.

"This is a great opportunity to experience aboriginal culture in all its aspects," says Waneek Horn-Miller, coordinator of the First Peoples' House. "It's a celebration of our traditions as well as recognizing our more contemporary expressions."
