Dr. Richard Fraser, Director of the Maude Abbott Medical Museum, provides a brief description of the function and/or use of the equipment.

This instrument was used to measure volumes or pressures in organs such as the heart or lung, or in a limb.  A flexible tube connected the narrow pipe at the bottom of the recorder (A) to the organ.  An increase (or decrease) in the pressure in that pipe pushed up (or pulled down) the aluminium piston. The latter was attached to a lever (B) that is in turn attached to a recording device such as a kymograph.
