Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Every year, MCLL hosts an Annual General Meeting (AGM) for evaluation of the year's activities and for election of officers and Council members. This meeting takes place no later than March 31 after at least 10 days’ notice is given to all members.

Who can participate in AGM?

Any person who was a member for at least one term in the twelve-month period preceding the date of AGM.

Why participate in AGM?

By attending the AGM, members can elect the Council and Executive Committee that shape MCLL governance, review and guide the past year’s activities and strategic direction, ensure transparent stewardship of membership fees and finances, and enjoy the insights of an interesting and accomplished guest speaker.ÌýAttending the AGM is also an opportunity to meet other lifelong learners you may not have had the chance to meet.

What is the format of AGM?

AGM is conducted fully online.

Professor Steven Pinker is one of today’s most influential thinkers on language and cognition. A native of Montreal, he earned his bachelor’s degree at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ in 1976, his PhD from Harvard in 1979, and taught at Harvard, Stanford, and MIT before returning to Harvard in 2003. Pinker’s research on vision, language, and social relations has won prizes from the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Institution of Great Britain, the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, the American Psychological Association, and the Association for Psychological Science. Featured guest: Marc Garneau

Marc Garneau was Canada’s first astronaut, a space pioneer who participated in three missions, with experience on theÌýChallengerÌýand the International Space Station. When he came back to earth, he was still immersed in space, taking on a role as president of the Canadian Space Agency in 2001, here in Montreal. And in 2006, he launched a new career in politics, during which he served as Minister of Transport and Foreign Affairs before his retirement in 2023. Dick Pound is a Canadian swimming champion, lawyer, and spokesman for ethics in sport. He was the first president of the World Anti-Doping Agency and vice-president of the International Olympic Committee. He is currently the longest-serving member of the IOC. Dick Pound talked about his experiences as an athlete, a lawyer, his career in the Olympic movement, his pioneering role in anti-doping, and his service to 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ as a member of the Board of Governors and as Chancellor.

Moche Safdie is an architect, urban planner, educator, theorist, and author. He is well known for incorporating principles of socially responsible design throughout his six-decade career. His projects include cultural, educational, and civic institutions such as neighborhoods and public parks, housing, mixed-use urban centers, and airports. He also had master plans for existing communities and entirely new cities in the Americas, the Middle East, and Asia. Safdie is most identified with designing Marina Bay Sands and Jewel Changi Airport, as well as his debut project Habitat 67, which was originally conceived as his thesis at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓÆµ. Moche Safdie spoke about the ideals and principles of Habitat ’67 – that architecture should be inherently timeless, profoundly humane and connected to nature – and why he continues to practise in pursuit of the promise of Habitat ’67.
