Biography:

Dr. Andrew Bateman completed his BSc and PhD in Biochemistry at Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London, where his doctoral work under Professor Anne Dell focused on fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry in the study of naturally occurring peptides. From 1985 to 1990 he undertook postdoctoral training as a Fellow in the Endocrine Research Laboratory at the Royal Victoria Hospital and 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ under Professor Samuel Solomon, with a focus on post-translational modification of pituitary peptides. He was appointed Assistant Professor at 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ in 1991, promoted to Associate Professor in 1996, and to Full Professor in 2005.

His research focuses on progranulin, a secreted glycoprotein that instructs cells to divide and move, inhibits cell death, and plays critical roles in neuroprotection and lysosomal function. Loss of one copy of the progranulin gene causes frontotemporal dementia, and his work aims to understand and therapeutically exploit progranulin's neuroprotective mechanisms.
