Five 91˿Ƶ researchers have been awarded more than $190,000 in Connection Grants by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The awards are part of $2.5 million in federal funding invested in 85 projects nationwide.

The Connection Grants program aims to realize the potential of social sciences and humanities research to influence, benefit, and impact society, within and beyond postsecondary institutions. Grants can be used to support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term knowledge mobilization initiatives.

While it is commonly understood that a difficult childhood can lead to mental health issues, research has now exposed deeper, more troubling impacts of early life adversity: that these experiences can reshape the brain and body at a cellular level. Physiological effects like these are at the core of the 91˿Ƶ-Douglas-Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry International Collaborative Initiative in Adversity and Mental Health (AMH Initiative).

Registration for the 10th and final HBHL Graduate Student Fellowships Program is now open!

Since 2017, HBHL has awarded over $6.7M to fund 321 Fellowships across nine competitions. The HBHL Graduate Student Fellowships Program seeks to attract, train and retain top graduate students from diverse disciplines and around the world to participate in interdisciplinary research training opportunities in brain and mental health research, knowledge translation/mobilization and innovation.

Research + Innovation (R+I) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Lara Khoury of the Faculty of Law as Associate Vice-President, Research (AVPR). Professor Khoury’s three-year term began on January 1, 2024. She succeeds Professor Debra Titone, Full Professor in the Department of Psychology and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Language & Multilingualism, who has served in the role of AVPR since 2021.

On December 12, 2023, the changes in title for senior leadership positions at 91˿Ƶ from Principal to President and Vice-Principal to Vice-President became official.

On October 5, 91˿Ƶ’s Board of Governors, following consultations with the Senate, approved amendments to the University Statutes to modify the titles. The change was then communicated to the Governor General to comply with the University’s statutory requirements.

Professor Dominique Bérubé has been appointed the next Vice-President (Research and Innovation). Professor Bérubé’s five-year renewable term will begin on July 1, 2024.

The Advisory Committee for the Selection of the Vice-President (Research and Innovation) conducted an extensive search within Canada and internationally, which benefitted from regular input from the 91˿Ƶ community. The Board of Governors accepted the Committee’s recommendation at its meeting on December 14, 2023.

On December 12, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, announced an investment of $41 million for genomics research under Genome Canada's Genomics Applications Partnership Program (GAPP). Over $23 million will be invested in genomics in Québec, including $5.4 million through Génome Québec.

To be included in the prestigious list, researchers must rank in the top 1 per cent worldwide for their fields and publications in the Web of Science index. In being named to this list, these investigators join a cohort of 6,849 individuals around the world who have been recognized for their academic contributions.
