More than half of Canadian girls and young women ages 15 to 29 with a mental health or substance use disorder received formal supports in 2022, but many are deterred by wait times and cost, according to . The report highlights a need to improve care, especially for racialized youth, who were less likely to find the support helpful.

Their paper, "Marginalizing and Conditioning Gaussians onto Linear Approximations of Smooth Manifolds with Applications in Robotics," was selected out of 1606 submissions.

The $50,000 award recognizes young leaders who have innovative approaches to creating change, enabling them to dedicate a year of their early career to a cause and community they are passionate about while engaging in hands-on and practical learning.

The Quebec cooperative Exceldor, known for its chicken breasts, wings, and nuggets, has taken steps to sell its assets to the Ontario company Aliments Sofina.

For the sale to be completed, it must be approved by two-thirds of the cooperative's members and two-thirds of the investment shareholders, as well as the Canadian Competition Bureau.

Montreal has seen a threefold increase in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in just two years, according to the city’s latest fire department report. E-bikes and e-scooters are the main culprits, but the batteries that power everything from cellphones to power tools are increasingly being flagged as fire hazards.

Former Sociology graduate student Chih-lan (Winnie) Yang, who defended in 2024, has been awarded the Arts Insight Dissertation Award for her dissertation “Marriage, Cohabitation, and Family among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Post-Marriage Equality Canada.” The award was officially conferred at the Arts Faculty Council Meeting on May 20.

In a large faculty like Arts this is a major accomplishment and speaks to the rigorous and high-quality work of our students.

Using a novel lab method they developed, 91˿Ƶ researchers have identified nine molecules in the blood that were elevated in teens diagnosed with depression. These molecules also predicted how symptoms might progress over time.

The findings of the could pave the way for earlier detection, before symptoms worsen and become hard to treat.

2024 was a rough year for retail in Canada, and 2025 doesn’t look much better, writes Charles de Brabant in Retail Insider. The Executive Director of the Bensadoun School of Retail Management noted that the combination of high interest rates and high inflation has taken a toll on consumer pocketbooks, and they are expected to focus on the basics this year. That plays well for mid-market brands.

After four years studying in Montreal, Sam Greene (BCOM’20, MMA’21) moved on to Toronto, where he caught on with Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays. Greene started in a role in an analytics role, but has since been named assistant pitching coach. As a junior member of the coashing staff, Greene is observing senior coaches like pitching coach Pete Walker and bullpen coach Graeme Johnson. “I’m specialized in using the advanced statistics we receive each match,” says Greene. “I contribute by guiding pitch choice and suggesting ways of approaching individual hitters.
