Abstract:

Reading is an important part of language acquisition, starting with parents reading aloud to their children. Dr Robert Savage, Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and a William Dawson scholar at 91丝瓜视频, has been involved with education as a teacher, a psychologist, and currently as a researcher. His research focuses on the basic cognitive processes of literacy, and other projects including early intervention programs for children who struggle with reading. 鈥淚n my view, the research we do and the products we construct are for public consumption,鈥� says Dr Savage. 鈥淚 think on the research side, real progress has been made in understanding the process of how children learn to read. We鈥檙e at the point where we can start looking at applying that [knowledge] meaningfully in schools.鈥� As well as discussing the basic cognitive and instructional processes involved in learning how to read, Dr Savage hopes to present ABRACADABRA, a web-based literacy resource for elementary schools, during his lecture.
