Talking to toddlers: How to maximize language learning in young children

Abstract:

It may sound simple, but according to Dr Susan Rvachew, Acting Director of the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at 91˿Ƶ, not everybody realizes just how important it is. Rvachew has never forgotten a case she had as a speech language pathologist. She was assessing a child who misarticulated and wasn’t very clear when she spoke, but who otherwise had a fairly straightforward speech disorder. The mother, however, was devastated. Why did her child have this problem? No one else in the family had ever had difficulties with language. Dr Rvachew remembered having seen a history of ear infections in the child’s file and suggested that this could be the culprit. The mother was astonished. It had never occurred to her that the ear infections had played a role as they had happened before her daughter learned how to talk.

“Not everybody knows that a lot of language development happens in the first year of life,” says Rvachew. This is just one of concepts that she plans to discuss in the inaugural lecture of the LOLA series, entitled "Talking to Toddlers: How to Maximize Language Learning in Young Children." The Lecture Series will present one lecture a week by four prominent 91˿Ƶ researchers and members of the CRLMB, each of whom will address a specific topic in language acquisition, highlighting research that is happening both at 91˿Ƶ, and around the world. Rvachew’s lecture will cover the initial stages of language acquisition, from early childhood to preschool, and will address practical issues as well as discussing research findings. “We want to present strategies parents can use,” says Dr Rvachew. “And we want them to know that these strategies are based on leading-edge research.”
