Sh e was assessing a child who misarticulated and\nwasn’t very clear when she spoke\, but who otherwise had a fairly\nstraightforward speech disorder. The mother\, however\, was\ndevastated. Why did her child have this proble m? No one else in the\nfamily had ever had difficulties with language. Dr Rvachew\nremembered having seen a history of ear infections in the child’s \nfile and suggested that this could be the culprit. The mother was\naston ished. It had never occurred to her that the ear infections\nhad played a role as they had happened before her daughter learned\nhow to talk.\n“Not everybody knows that a lot of language development happens\nin the first y ear of life\,” says Rvachew. This is just one of\nconcepts that she plans to discuss in the inaugural lecture of the\nLOLA series\, entitled 'Talkin g to Toddlers: How to\nMaximize Language Learning in Young Children.' The Lecture\nSeries will present one lecture a week by four prominent 91˿Ƶ\n researchers and members of the CRLMB\, each of whom will address a\nspecif ic topic in language acquisition\, highlighting research that\nis happenin g both at 91˿Ƶ\, and around the world.
