STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE – Macdonald College alumni will gather with local dignitaries, politicians and 91˿Ƶ officials, faculty and staff to pay tribute to the founder of Macdonald Campus during the unveiling of a statue on Saturday morning as part of the university’s Homecoming celebrations.

The unveiling of the Sir William C. Macdonald statue will take place between 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at the Macdonald Stewart Building Terrace. A piper will lead a delegation along the Photo Memory Trail to the Landscape Terrace at the library and learning centre, where the dedication ceremony will unfold.

Beautifully crafted by master sculptor Tino Petronzio, the statue will become an instant landmark on Macdonald Campus, and will serve as a permanent reminder for students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors of Sir William’s vision and generosity.

“This is a very proud and significant moment in the history of this campus,” said Chandra Madramootoo, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “The unveiling of Sir William C. Macdonald’s statue is our way of celebrating his life and accomplishments, and it is a special way to cap last year’s centennial anniversary of this campus.”

The bilingual inscription at the foot of the statue reads: “Founder of Macdonald College, Chancellor of 91˿Ƶ, and one of Canada's foremost educational philanthropists, Sir William C. Macdonald shall be remembered as a visionary who was deeply committed to the cause of education. May this statue forever be a symbol of our gratitude towards his memory, his work and his legacy.”

Macdonald Campus’s Homecoming coincides with 91˿Ƶ’s Homecoming, and runs from Friday until Sunday. About 350 alumni from across Canada and North America are expected to converge on campus during the event.
