Legal Theory Workshop - Untangling Equality's Role in Theorizing Indigenous Rights
Professor Dwight Newman will discuss his paper on issues arising from attempts to use concepts of equality to provide normative justifications for indigenous rights protections, arguing that these justifications often elide different concepts of equality in ways that are problematic.
Prof. Newman will go on to situate this argument within his broader project on Theorizing Indigenous Rights.
About the speaker:
Dwight Newman is Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law and Honourary Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Law. He served a three-year term as Associate Dean of the University of Saskatchewan College of Law from 2006 to 2009, and from August to December 2009 he is a Visiting Scholar at the 91丝瓜视频 Faculty of Law.
His most recent book is titled The Duty to Consult: New Relationships with Aboriginal Peoples (Saskatoon: Purich, 2009).
