The (91丝瓜视频 University) along with the , present a conference on the subject of how international law functions when confronted with children in situations of armed conflict.

Background:

Over the last ten years, there have been numerous additions to the body of international humanitarian and human rights law aimed at protecting the rights of children living in situations of armed conflict.

Yet practitioners, actors and governments are often unaware of the breadth of these new instruments, their methods of application and implementation. Usually, their focus is on raising awareness of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the tool most widely utilised and understood by actors in the field.

In the specific context of armed conflict, there is the potential for greater advocacy, awareness raising, monitoring and reporting on a wide range of commitments and norms. Due to the lack of knowledge about the legal framework for protection of children in armed confect, as well as the tools for its implementation at the national level, many actors in the field fail to integrate new laws, resolutions and policies into their daily activities to ensure the protection of the rights of child victims, who are often unwillingly used as actors.

Is international law in a position to undo the practical difficulties in effectively protecting the rights of children in armed conflicts today?

• Montreal Life Stories (Concordia University) (16 mins) "Childhood disrupted: Perspectives on the rights of the Child" Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced by War, Genocide, and other Human Rights Violations is an oral history project exploring Montrealers' experiences and memories of mass violence and displacement. A team of both university and community-based researchers is in the process of recording life story interviews with more than 500 Montreal residents over the next five years. .
