Howard Brenton鈥檚 fictional take on history鈥檚 most sordid love affair is a sweeping, comical, and celebratory historical narrative about a time when belief, faith, and ideals are not a matter of choice but of necessity. Set during the High Middle Ages - a time marked by intellectual revival but still devoutly connected to its faith, In Extremis examines the ongoing conflict between reason and religion.聽 At the heart of the story is Pierre Abelard, a medieval philosopher and scholar, and Heloise d鈥橝rgenteuil, a French nun and scholar. Theirs is a true life version of Romeo and Juliet; a tragic tale of sublime passion doomed from the start; a passion that is equally profane and sacred. 聽Director Sean Carney sees casting young students as essential to the nature of the play - for whom better to embody this energy, idealism, and commitment than a generation of young adults who have not yet been asked to compromise their own ideals by the cynicism of the modern world.
