Inaugural Call for Research Proposals

The Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning (SCSIL) is pleased to announce the inaugural call for applications for Conference Travel (CT) and Operational Research Support or Seed Funding (ORS-SF) available to Faculty Members of the 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

We seek to support research and research dissemination that involves simulation OR interactive learning (or both), where:

1. data that is part of at least one formal research question is collected at the SCSIL and
2. the participants are healthcare trainees’ or healthcare workers engaging in continuing professional development.

While Faculty are eligible to apply for both travel or research funding categories, priority will be given to distributing funds between as many eligible faculty as possible—all-else-equal.

Conference Travel (CT) Category: Supporting the presentation of empirical research at major international (priority; e.g., AMEE, AERA, EARLI, IMSH, SESAM, ACS, ASE) or national conferences (e.g., Sim Expo, ICAM, C-CASE).

Eligibility Guidelines:

• International conference travel has a cap of $5,000 with allowed expenses as per 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ guidelines (e.g., per diem, economy class flight).
• Travel has a cap of $3,000 within Canada.
• Faculty can only apply for this category once per call for proposals.
• A faculty member can: (1) apply to present and attend a conference OR (2) have a student they are supervising attend and present their work at a conference, OR (3) apply to support both supervising faculty member and presenting student.
• Priority will be given to international conference presentations

Application Guidelines:

• Send documentation of accepted conference presentation along with the submitted abstract.
  • Include conference name and whether the conference location is local, national, or international.

Operational Research Support Category: Supporting operational costs of ongoing research (e.g., standardized patient costs, disposable equipment, licenses, statistical consultation, engineering student coding) or seed funding for new research projects.

Eligibility Guidelines:

• $1,000-$5,000 per project
• Faculty can only apply for this category once per call for proposals

Application Guidelines (very similar to the IHSE’s Research Seed Fund):

1. A two-page written description of the proposed project
2. A proposed budget and justification
3. A lay summary
4. References
5. An abridged CV (maximum 2 pages) per team member

Within the two-page limit:

• Background and Rationale
• Proposed Research Question
• Methodology and Methods
• Anticipated Findings/Results
• Significance to HSE
• Feasibility & Team Member Roles
• Project Timeline
• Proposed Funding Plan for future work

In supplemental pages:

• Budget (maximum 1 page) *
• Lay Summary (maximum 250 words)
• An abridged CV (maximum 2 pages) per team member
• References

All sections of the application must respect the following: Font 12 (Times New Roman or equivalent) and minimum 2 cm margins. Single space is permissible.

Successful applicants will (a) acknowledge funding from the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning (SCSIL) in conference presentations and in publications and (b) share requested information with SCSIL directors and staff, such as project description and resulting publications.

Applications will be reviewed by the Director and Director of Research and accepted on a rolling basis starting September 30^th until available funds have been exhausted. We aim to fund at least two from each category with one allotment that is flexible. The Director of Research will receive the sixth allotment for eligible expenses.
