Faculty of Arts commits to addressing anti-Black racism

Dear members of the Arts community,

Yesterday, 91˿Ƶ Principal and Vice-Chancellor Suzanne Fortier announced the University’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism. The Action Plan is a crucial step forward for the university to deepen and elaborate its commitments within the Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Plan to confronting anti-Black racism.

Remembering Professor Stéfan Sinclair (1972-2020)

The Faculty of Arts is deeply saddened to announce the passing of ProfessorStéfan Sinclair of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Three of Professor Sinclair's close colleagues—Geoffrey Rockwell at the University of Alberta, Susan Brown at the University of Guelph, and Michael Sinatra at the Université de Montréal—honour his life and work below.

Nine 91˿Ƶ researchers selected in newest round of Canada CIFAR AI Chairs

CIFAR today announced itsnewest cohort of Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, which includes nine researchers from 91˿Ƶ, bringing the total number of 91˿Ƶ researchers named to the program to 17. These top academic researchers are part of the $125 million Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, the world’s first national strategy of its kind. The Canada CIFAR AI Chair Program represents an investment of $30 million at nine universities, and mobilizes over 150 researchers across the country.

Professor Ragep Awarded Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities

Professor Jamil Ragep (Institute of Islamic Studies)is the recipient of the 2019Turkish Academy of Sciences Prize in Social Sciences and Humanities.The award will be presented by the Turkish President Erdogan at a ceremony in Ankara on December 30.

Ragep is the Canada Research Chair in the History of Science in Islamic Societies.

Three outstanding women named finalists for the 2019 Cundill History Prize

Three finalists for the 2019 Cundill History Prize were announced last night at an event at Massey College, Toronto. The finalists, all female, are UCL Professor of German History, Mary Fulbrook, Harvard Professor and New Yorker staff writer, Jill Lepore, and Julia Lovell, Professor ofModern China at Birkbeck College at the University of London.
