Mentor to many, Derek’s work concerned the physical properties of cellulose. His research focused mainly on the preparation and properties of cellulose nanocrystals, and the liquid crystalline properties of cellulose-derived materials. His work, including over 210 research articles, patents, and chapters in books brought him national and international recognition, including the 1994 Anselme Payen Award, ACS Cellulose and Renewable Materials Division; the 2013 NSERC Synergy Award (91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ/FPInnovations/Celluforce), and the 2013 Marcus Wallenberg Prize (awarded by the King of Sweden in person) for cellulose nanocrystal research.

Derek was warm and friendly, always listening and willing to help. We have fond memories of him having tea daily with his group in the Pulp & Paper building, when he would share a slice of cake and a brief chat with young colleagues and group members. Derek’s passing is a tremendous loss to all of us that had a chance to get to know him. Derek’s kindness is something we will forever cherish. We extend our condolences to his wide Adeline; his children, Heather (Scott MacKenzie) and David (Karina Jean); and his grandsons, Tristan, Toby, Thomas, Roman and Julien
