The Rideau Hall Foundation has announced the 2026 Governor General’s Innovation Awards recipients. Myriam Denov, Canada Research Chair in Children, Families and Armed Conflict (Tier 1) and Professor in 91˿��Ƶ’s School of Social Work, is one of five recipients across Canada.

Against the backdrop of typically fragile Canadian spring weather, the world-renowned XPRIZE held a brain trust meeting at 91˿��Ƶ, with a group of over 80 delegates arriving in Montreal for three days of conferencing and workshops.

The brain trust meetings are the first step in a year-long process that leads to the eventual design of prizes for this groundbreaking organization. For the Montreal edition, delegates focused on three domains: Energy + Climate + Nature, Food + Water + Waste, and Health. The event comes as the group aims to internationalize its presence.

The ubiquity and scale of startups is impossible to ignore these days. From humble beginnings, companies like Airbnb or Uber have become household names, and very quickly. Apple and Amazon also began modestly – both were launched in garages only to become global giants.

But despite their undeniable success, it is interesting to note that many of these forms – Apple is a notable one – were launched by people without advanced degrees. Startups founded by PhD holders are the exception, not the rule.
