This limit was attributed to the wave nature of light an d the resulting phenomenon of diffraction. I show - not least on the basis of my autobiography - how this limit has been radically overcome in fluor escence microscopy. Recent developments such as MINFLUX and MINSTED micros copy even achieve resolutions of 1-3 nm\, which is about the size of the f luorescence molecules themselves. The hundredfold better resolution and mo lecular dynamics that can be measured with these new methods open up compl etely new fields of application for light microscopy in biomedicines.\n\n  \n\nBio:\n\nStefan Hell is a director at both the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Göttingen and the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg\, Germany.\n\nHell is credited with having conceived\, validated and applied the first viable concept for overcoming Abbe’s diffraction-limited resolution barrier in a light-focusing fluoresc ence microscope. For this accomplishment he has received numerous awards\, including the 2014 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience and the Nobel Prize in Chem istry.\n\nStefan Hell received his doctorate (1990) in physics from the Un iversity of Heidelberg. From 1991 to 1993 he worked at the European Molecu lar Biology Laboratory\, followed by stays as a senior researcher at the U niversity of Turku\, Finland\, between 1993 and 1996\, and as a visiting s cientist at the University of Oxford\, England\, in 1994.
