Molecular Engineering of Conductive Framework Materials for Environmental Stewardship

Abstract:

Addressing global challenges in environmental stewardship requires materials that do more than passively withstand their surroundings—they must actively interact with, respond to, and ultimately help protect the environment. This seminar will highlight our efforts to molecularly engineer electrically conductive metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and related porous materials that integrate molecular recognition, charge transport, and programmable functionality within a single platform. By controlling framework composition, electronic structure, and the underlying substrate within the device, we establish structure–property relationships that govern chemical sensing, molecular capture, and selective electronic response. Examples of applications include conductive framework materials for low-power chemical sensing and multifunctional textiles capable of simultaneously capturing hazardous gases, while electronically reporting their chemical state. These systems illustrate how molecular engineering can transform porous materials from passive sorbents into multifunctional interfaces capable of simultaneous sensing, filtration, and detoxification.

Bio:

Katherine was born and raised in Ukraine and emigrated with her family to the United States as she was starting high school.  She obtained her B.S. in Chemistry at Boston College, where she developed a passion for Materials Chemistry, working in the laboratory of Larry Scott. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University under the guidance of George Whitesides and completed her postdoctoral training with Tim Swager at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Katherine began her independent scientific career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Dartmouth College in July 2015 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2021. Since 2022, she has been serving as an Associate Editor of ACS Sensors.
