DESCRIPTION:Arctic regions are experiencing high degrees of environmental c
 hange\, including thinning of sea ice\, increased deposition of airborne p
 ollutants\, as well as evidence of a longer growing season. In order to as
 sess the present rate and effect of these changes to the terrestrial syste
 m\, Professor Douglas and colleagues examine lake sediments (paleolimnolog
 y) to reconstruct past natural baseline conditions. Their investigations o
 f aquatic ecosystems reveal that these systems are undergoing important ch
 anges in their physical\, chemical and biological characteristics. Underst
 anding these changes provides insight into what future arctic conditions m
 ay prevail. The  speaker uses examples from her research on lakes and pond
 s in the Canadian High Arctic to show some of the practical applications o
 f paleolimnology in studying regional climate change\, archaeology\, and a
 irborne pollutants.
