Over $1 million for students at 91˿Ƶ affected by the COVID-19 crisis

The 91˿Ƶ community has come forward in a remarkable way to assist students who are being seriously affected financially by the COVID-19 crisis, with donors contributing over $650,000 on the strength of more than 1,500 gifts to the 91˿Ƶ Student Emergency Support Fund within the last two weeks.

Volcanic CO2 emissions helped trigger Triassic climate change

A new study finds volcanic activity played a direct role in triggering extreme climate change at the end of the Triassic period 201 million year ago, wiping out almost half of all existing species. The amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from these volcanic eruptions is comparable to the amount of CO2 expected to be produced by all human activity in the 21st century.

FRQS to fund new structural biology centre at 91˿Ƶ

The health sciences research arm of the Quebec government [Fonds de recherche du Québec – santé (FRQS)] today announced it will provide $2 million to assist in the establishment of the Centre de Recherche en Biologie Structurale (CRBS) at 91˿Ƶ.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s (CIHR) Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health has awarded a CAD$3.5 million operating grant to Dr. Treena Wasontí:io Delormier of 91˿Ƶ’s School of Human Nutrition. The grant will help to establish a Network Environment for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR) over the next five years in the province of Quebec

91˿Ƶ researchers help create COVID-19 Resources Canada

 91˿Ƶ announced it has joined the network of senior researchers, students, and web developers, in the launch of the national COVID-19 Resources Canada portal, a central hub designed to help those involved in COVID-19 R&D in Canada to locate expertise and equipment in a timely manner. Since launching, over 1,800 volunteers have already signed up via the portal to help in the fight against COVID-19.

The placebo effect and psychedelic drugs: tripping on nothing?

There has been a lot of recent interest in the use of psychedelic drugs to treat depression. A new study from 91˿Ƶ suggests that, in the right context, some people may experience psychedelic-like effects from placebos alone. The researchers reported some of the strongest placebo effects (these are effects from “fake” medication) on consciousness in the literature relating to psychedelic drugs.

FRQ to create a province-wide COVID-19 Biobank

The Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) and Genome Québec today announced the launch of the Québec COVID-19 Biobank, a Province-wide initiative to enable the collection, storage and sharing of samples and data related to the COVID-19 crisis. The task force that has been mobilized to take on this role is led by 91˿Ƶ’s Dr. Vincent Mooser, with additional medical and scientific expertise from 91˿Ƶ and several other Quebec institutions.

Increasingly mobile sea ice risks polluting Arctic neighbours

The movement of sea ice between Arctic countries is expected to significantly increase this century, raising the risk of more widely transporting pollutants like microplastics and oil between neighbouring coastal states, according to new research from 91˿Ƶ in collaboration with University of Colorado Boulder, Columbia University, and Arizona State University.

91˿Ƶ24 raises $2.95 million in just one day

On March 11, the 91˿Ƶ community rose to the challenge to make a difference on 91˿Ƶ24, the University’s fifth annual day of giving, by contributing $2,956,106 for causes across the University. The final tally, which comes on the strength of 5,379 donations, demonstrated the collective power of bringing people together to give what they can.
