Vincent Rigby on the Implications of the US Attack on Venezuela | CTV News

Published: 5 January 2026

January 5, 2026 | Vincent Rigby spoke to CTV News on the potential fallout after the United States’ incursion in Venezuela on January 3. Rigby mentioned that the removal of Maduro was not necessarily a bad thing, given the rampant corruption and authoritarianism throughout his leadership. He emphasized a critical question: how much influence will Venezuelan citizens have in choosing the country’s next leader?

Rigby also underscored that the invasion represents a clear violation of Venezuelan sovereignty. He states that though the US successfully removed a dictator, it is not in Canadian interests to see our neighbour and ally intervene in another country in this way, and this may have serious consequences for future Canada-US relations.

Rigby spoke on this issue on The Andrew Carter Morning Show as well, stating that the UN Security Council does not have much power to influence or interfere in the US’ actions, as Trump’s administration has already blatantly violated another country’s right to sovereignty. Rigby advises that Canada reinforce its strategic autonomy.
