Anil Wasif on Zohran Mamdani’s Municipal Supermarkets | Policy Magazine

Published: 5 January 2026

In Policy Magazine, Max Bell School advisory board member and MPP '21 Anil Wasif discusses Zohran Mamdani, the new mayor of New York City, and his $60 million pilot project that aims to establish municipal supermarkets across each borough. The project aims to address the growing public concern of high grocery prices.

Wasif argues that this vision may only be achieved after solving the issue of buying power and competition with retail giants like Walmart when it comes to wholesale pricing. Without deep discounts from distributors, municipal grocery stores often end up charging higher prices to offset costs. Wasif also recommends that Mamdani’s administration adopt the public-private partnership (PPP) model currently used in Atlanta and Chicago.
