Ways to Find Calm During Midterms

Five ways to calm your nervous system when in the thick of academic work.

Midterms are busy, and it can be a challenge to access enough inner quiet and rest. Our nervous systems can stay on alert even when we need to take breaks, stop for a meal, sleep, socialize, etc. What are some ways we can switch out of a vigilant state and find calm? Here are a few things that work!

  1. Slow down: try walking, moving, and talking a bit slower. Even a small intentional adjustment can calm our breathing and heart rate, which in turn leads to a calmer nervous system.
  2. Take the pressure off: When we’re in accomplishing mode, it’s normal to push ourselves to do even more than usual and perform tasks at 150% capacity. Instead, give yourself permission to perform tasks at 60-70% sometimes. This disrupts perfectionism and you'll still do a good job, but with more calm! If feeling rushed, move flexible to-do items to a latter date to decrease expectations and carve out time to rest.
  3. Use safe self-talk: Sometimes thoughts can distort the situations we’re facing, making them seem threatening, negative, or high stakes when they need not be. We can gently challenge irrational or catastrophizing thoughts and talk to ourselves in a compassionate way to find more calm.
  4. Use vagal toning and/or somatic movement to move into a relaxed “rest and digest” state: This could include deep breathing exercises, yoga, Qigong, humming, singing, or tapping exercises. You can enjoy some such beneficial techniques in MORSL’s new
  5. Spend time in a calm space away from devices: This could be a Campus Quiet Space or the room in your apartment where you feel the most safe. You might use soothing music, scents, and/or lighting, and even craft a personally meaningful nook for yourself. A journal, a book to read for pleasure or spirituality, art supplies and any spiritual/faith resources are objects to consider including.

It may also be helpful to remember that your worth is not determined by any academic or other successes. It runs much deeper and is inherent and non-quantifiable. Your learning has value in and of itself, measures of worldly success aside. May you find calm, peace, and meaning in your academic pursuits this semester and feel connected, and valued just as you are ❤️.
