First North American centre to receive certification from the European Society of Hypertension

The Hypertension and Vascular Medicine Centre of Excellence at The Institute has earned certification as a Hypertension Excellence Centre from the European Society of Hypertension (ESH), becoming the first centre in North America to receive this distinction. The designation recognizes institutions that meet rigorous standards in hypertension care, research and education.

“Leading this application was a rewarding experience, and I am grateful to contribute to work advancing hypertension and vascular medicine,” said Helena Papacostas, Research Program Manager, Vascular Health Unit at The Institute. “This recognition reflects the strength of our team and the leadership of Dr. Daskalopoulou and Dr. Touyz.”

Part of The Institute’s Hypertension and Vascular Diseases Network, the Centre advances research into the complex mechanisms underlying hypertension and vascular disease. Its work focuses on improving precision, mechanism-based management and identifying disease-specific therapeutic targets.

“Being named the first North American European Society of Hypertension Centre of Excellence in Hypertension and Vascular Medicine is both a profound honour and a defining responsibility,” said , Director of the Hypertension and Vascular Diseases Network at The Institute. “This recognition reflects years of scientific rigor, clinical excellence and collaboration among our clinicians, scientists, trainees and patients. It also strengthens our commitment to advancing innovation in hypertension research and translating discovery into precision care.”

Dr. Daskalopoulou recently highlighted the expansion of research to encompass pediatric hypertension and family-based studies, further broadening the Network’s impact across the life course.

“Being recognized as an institution of excellence in hypertension research and clinical care is truly an honour,” said , Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer of The Institute. “As the first North American Hypertension Excellence Centre accredited by the European Society of Hypertension, this distinction reflects the strength of our multidisciplinary team and the leadership of Dr. Daskalopoulou in making this achievement possible.”
