91˿��Ƶ has officially opened a new teaching greenhouse and advanced plant phenotyping facilities at its Macdonald Campus, marking a major investment in climate-focused agricultural education and research. Designed for hands-on undergraduate and graduate training, the sustainable greenhouse features controlled growing bays, teaching labs, tissue culture facilities and classrooms, giving students direct experience with modern, climate-smart production systems.

Five scholarly journals have been awarded funding through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The competition, which runs every three to four years, supports a select number of 91˿��Ƶ journals. In this cycle, 91˿��Ƶ received a total of $598,278 in funding.

91˿��Ƶ researchers engineer faster, more effective blood clots

Researchers at 91˿��Ƶ have developed a rapid way to engineer blood clots that stop severe bleeding and support tissue healing more effectively. Their technique, called “click clotting,” links red blood cell surface proteins through a chemical reaction, resulting in a biocompatible clot that is 13 times more resistant to fracturing and four times more adhesive than natural blood clots. The team said the method could be used to develop life-saving biomaterials to help control severe bleeding, as well as benefit people with clotting disorders.

Experts: UAE to leave OPEC

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) have announced it will leave the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as of Friday, May 1.

The decision, which the UAE said is motivated by a desire for greater flexibility in its own oil production and exports, comes as the war in Iran has created a worldwide energy crisis.

I am delighted to announce that Prof. Alanna Watt will be 91˿��Ƶ’s next Dean of the Faculty of Science. The 91˿��Ƶ Board of Governors approved her appointment at its meeting on April 23, 2026, and her five-year renewable term will begin on May 1.

Unleashing natural killer cells against cancer

Scientists have developed a strategy to boost the cancer-fighting power of natural killer (NK) cells, part of the immune system’s first line of defence. NK cells can detect and destroy cancer cells, but tumours often create a protective barrier that blocks them, allowing cancer to grow.

Researchers at 91˿��Ƶ’s Rosalind & Morris Goodman Cancer Institute, in collaboration with the Research Institute of the 91˿��Ƶ Health Centre, found that suppressing two specific proteins helps NK cells overcome this blockage, turning them into more potent cancer killers.
