Conventional wisdom says that large numbers of students enter wit h public service aspirations\, but most leave to pursue careers in the pri vate sector\, dissuaded and demoralized by law school culture and training . What encourages law students to commit to public interest careers over t he long-haul—to stay “in it for good”?\n\nOur guests sought to answer that question by analyzing data from an empirical study of the graduates of si x California law schools between 2001 and 2010. Comparing the impact of en dowment effects—what students bring to law school—and educational effects— what they experience there—they found that student participation in a suit e of public interest programs is related to what they call “public interes t persistence.”\n\nTheir study concludes that persistence is a complex pro duct of what they bring to law school and what they take from it. The char acteristics and experiences students bring with them to law school matter in predicting persistence\, but so do the choices students make and the av ailability of resources to support those choices. A critical finding of th e authors' study is that law schools play a key role in fostering public i nterest careers: nurturing students by providing the experiences and tools they need to navigate the job market and persevere over the course of the ir professional lives.\n\nOur guest will offer recommendations for law sch ools to build on current programs in support of public interest careers.\n DTSTART:20200402T170000Z DTEND:20200402T183000Z LOCATION:Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY:CANCELLED - In It For Good: An Empirical Study of Public Interest C areers URL:/law/channels/event/cancelled-it-good-empirical-st udy-public-interest-careers-319733 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
