Please registe r by email at cipp1.law [at] mcgill.ca. First come\, first served.\n\nUp u ntil recently\, Geographical Indications (GIs) were limited to wine and sp irits. Now\, they extend to a variety of agro-food products such as cider. This expansion\, paired with the coming into force of the Comprehensive E conomic Trade Agreement (CETA) in September 2017\, marks Canada’s new miss ion to increase the scope of protections for GIs.\n\nYet\, surprisingly\, GI protections under CETA only benefit European producers—no Canadian prod ucts were included in the list of protected products. Canada’s failure to put products forward for GI protection in CETA is symptomatic of its defic ient agricultural policy and a hesitation to recognize terroir-related foo d innovations.\n\nNotwithstanding federal shortcomings\, other provinces h ave been quick to act. For example\, Québec has designed original legislat ion to support and regulate the development of new local terroir products such as ice cider and ice wine.\n\nEfforts such as Québec’s are particular ly timely\, as consumers are becoming increasingly sophisticated\, crave m ore authentic products\, and pay more attention to what they consume. Prod ucts must now speak to the socioeconomic context in which they were grown\ , marketed\, and sold\, and consumers demand better quality and hold produ cers and governments accountable to a greater extent than ever before.\n\n Please join us for this half-day multidisciplinary conference\, which exam ines issues and tensions regarding regulation\, economics\, and culture th rough the lenses of science\, ethics\, society\, and law. Experts from a v ariety of disciplines will use cider as a case study\, a bone of contentio n\, or\, in its French rendition\, la pomme de discordre!\n\nA request for 4 hours of accredited continuing legal education for jurists has been mad e to a recognized provider.\n DTSTART:20180329T173000Z DTEND:20180329T213000Z LOCATION:CA\, QC\, Montréal\, H3C 2N5\, Centre d'entreprises et d'innovatio n de Montréal\, 20\, rue Queen SUMMARY:Terroir of Innovation: the Development of Geographical Indications in Canada – the Case of Cider URL:/law/channels/event/terroir-innovation-development -geographical-indications-canada-case-cider-284301 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
