 ised by access to land and the social consequences that result. Land\, the
  conception of which varies between cultures and legal traditions\, is bot
 h our environment and the site for human activities.\n\nThe manifold pract
 ices and legal regimes arising out of land occupation raise questions rega
 rding its rightful use. In a world of ever-expanding human activity and in
 creasing populations\, the issues raised by access to land present themsel
 ves with even greater acuity.\n\nThis conference gives us an occasion to e
 xamine the ways in which certain factors\, such as racialization\, gender\
 , and the marginalization of minority groups\, relate to issues of access 
 to land and whether access to land can shed new light on such social issue
 s. How do these encounters and frictions inform\, protect or limit the rig
