A new milestone in Indigenous Legal Self-Governance

The First Nations Territory of Kahnawà:ke, about a 20-minute drive from downtown Montreal, has come one step closer to complete judicial control.

Last spring, 91˿��Ƶ graduates Aubrey Charette, BCL/LLB’10, and Brandon Montour, BCL/JD’23, were appointed as the inaugural decision-makers of Kahnawà:ke’s Administrative Tribunal, a new body under the umbrella of the Kahnawà:ke Justice System. This marks an important step in the implementation of the Kahnawà:ke Justice Act of 2015, arrived at through community consensus.

Growing up in Grand Cascapedia, a small town of just 300, nestled in the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec, Laurie-Ann Willett, BCL’09, LLB’09, found joy in flipping through the Sears catalogue, cutting out carpet samples to compare the colours, watching “Fashion Television” on CTV with Jeanne Beker, and imagining a world far beyond her immediate surroundings. “I just loved fashion and makeup,” she recalls.

La Faculté de droit exprime sa profonde tristesse face au décès de l’honorable Ken Dryden, CP, OC, LLB’73, LLD’18, un membre éminent de notre communauté diplômé, apprécié de tous.

Étudiant en droit et joueur professionnel de la LNH dans les années 1970, Ken Dryden a tracé sa propre voie, soulevant pour notre doyen de l’époque, feu John W. Durnford, une question épineuse devenue célèbre : « Quels accommodements peut-on offrir à un étudiant qui participe à finale de la Coupe Stanley pendant les examens finaux de droit ? »
