 n has been a major – perhaps the major – force in increasing wealth and we
 ll-being over the last centuries. Today\, we benefit from record levels of
  health\, safety\, and prosperity and the lowest levels of threat\, terror
 ism and crime not only at home but around the world. Nevertheless\, the co
 sts of maintaining the innovation are increasing\, not only exponentially 
 but super-exponentially. Have we reached the point at which the resources 
 to maintain the system become unsustainable? There are signs that this poi
 nt is approaching: declining life expectancy in the US and UK\, flat innov
 ation productivity despite vast increases in resources\, and lower prosper
 ity resulting from innovation. If we are reaching this point\, the only wa
 y out is to innovate how we innovate. In this session\, we will explore th
 is idea and possible ways to meet this challenge.\n\nRichard Gold is a Jam
 es 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Professor\, and the founding Director of the CIPP. He teaches in
  the areas of domestic\, international and comparative intellectual proper
 ty and innovation policy. His research focuses on the life sciences.\n\nCe
