Workshop with the Rwandan Space Agency

Last Friday, the Institute of Air and Space Law wrapped up a successful three-day workshop with the Rwanda Space Agency, discussing domestic space law. The workshop, which was organised and moderated by Dr Arnold Agaba, included presentations from Professor Andrea Harrington, Adjunct Professor and Alumna Diane Howard, DCL candidate Judith S. jahnke, and LLM student Melanie Munyori. The workshop concluded with the IASL and the RSA signing a Memorandum of Understanding, agreeing to continue the fruitful collaboration between the two institutions.

Prof. Wedenig holds a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from 91˿��Ƶ, as well as a Magister Iuris (Mag.iur.) from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL).

IASL Class attends ICAO Symposia

IASL Sessional Lecturer, Dr. Joseph Wilson and his students in the Government Regulation of Air Transport Course attended two Symposia organized by ICAO on Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) from 7 to 9 November, and Drone Enable from 14 to 16 November at ICAO Headquarters in Montreal. “The symposia presented a unique opportunity for the students to hear the industry experts and to see how their work provides the basis for ICAO’s Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs)” said Dr. Wilson.

Military Promotion for Major Matthew Ormsbee

On 28 October 2022, the Institute of Air and Space Law celebrated the military promotion of Matthew Ormsbee to Major in the United States Air Force.

Matt joins the Institute as an active-duty military member as he pursues his LL.M. in Air and Space Law (Thesis). Before beginning his studies, Matt served at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, and Misawa Air Base, Japan. He has filled numerous positions as a prosecutor, international law attorney, and defense attorney. He was in private practice in New York before commissioning with the Air Force in 2016.

With effect from 1 September, Stefan-Michael will take over the role of the outgoing Executive Director, Kuan-Wei (David) Chen, who has served the Centre and the Institute admirably over the past ten years.

We are delighted to announce that Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL) Adjunct Professor Dr. Donal Hanley has been appointed Associate Professor by the 91˿��Ƶ Faculty of Law and assume the position of Interim Director. Dr. Hanley is taking over the helm from Professor Ram Jakhu, who for over two years has directed and managed the Institute through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the extended medical leave of the previous IASL Director Professor Brian Havel.
