“Language in Transition: Changing Terms and Changing Identities in the UK Trans Community”

This paper will examine the linguistic and cultural shift that took place to bring about this change: from the earlier distinctions between “transvestites”, “transsexuals”, and “sex changes”, to the existence of a community under the “trans” umbrella. It will examine the ways that broader cultural and technological changes, especially the shift in the late 1980s and early 1990s towards single-issue politics based on personal identity, influenced the formation of the trans community as it is recognizable today.

Now in its 29th year, the MBHS provides a forum for faculty and graduate students sharing a research interest in any phase of British History (very broadly defined). Papers of about 45-50 minutes or pre-circulated papers are followed by discussion. For information, please contact Elizabeth Elbourne (elizabeth.elbourne [at] mcgill.ca) or Brian Lewis (brian.lewis [at] mcgill.ca).
