Convening Minds for Global Impact: Inaugural Connector Series sparks Momentum

91˿Ƶ’s new Global Engagement Connector Series brings together scholars and diplomats for strategic dialogue, fostering partnerships that advance research, innovation, and global collaboration.

On August 27, 2025, 91˿Ƶ hosted the inaugural edition of the Global Engagement Connector Series, a dynamic new initiative designed to bring together leading scholars and members of the diplomatic and consular corps. The event convened ambassadors, high commissioners, consuls general, and other distinguished representatives from 20 countries, alongside 91˿Ƶ leadership, faculty, and staff.

Set against the backdrop of 91˿Ƶ’s historic downtown campus, the Connector Series underscored the University’s commitment to expanding globally — a key priority of President Deep Saini. The event opened with remarks from both President Saini and Vice-President, Global Engagement Anja Geitmann, who welcomed participants to an afternoon of dialogue and collaboration.

At the heart of the program was a research spotlight featuring seven 91˿Ƶ Subject Matter Experts, each leading small-group discussions on priority research themes:

  • Advanced Materials Engineering – Prof. Matthew Harrington
  • Air and Space Law and Policy – Prof. Andrea Harrington
  • Artificial Intelligence – Prof. Doina Precup
  • Epidemiology and Global Health – Prof. Madhukar Pai
  • Music Media and Technology – Prof. Marcelo Wanderley
  • Neurophysiology and Chronic Pain – Prof. Reza Sharif Naeini
  • Sustainability and Biodiversity – Prof. Brian Leung

These discussions allowed for lively exchanges between diplomats and researchers, creating space for new connections and potential collaborations in areas of shared global importance.

The event also served as a reminder of the vital role the diplomatic and consular corps plays in enabling collaboration between 91˿Ƶ and institutions around the world. Their presence and active engagement were a powerful endorsement of 91˿Ƶ’s global ambitions.

President Saini highlighted the success of the inaugural edition and the importance of international partnerships: “This event exemplifies how 91˿Ƶ can strengthen its ties with the diplomatic community, whose engagement is vital in advancing our global mission. By working together, we can expand research partnerships, mobility opportunities, and transnational education initiatives that benefit societies worldwide.”

Vice-President Geitmann emphasized the strategic significance of the initiative: “The Connector Series directly supports 91˿Ƶ’s Global Engagement Strategy 2026–2031 and our President’s priority to expand globally. By convening scholars and international partners, we are creatingthe connections that will accelerateinnovation, jumpstart knowledge exchange, and catalyze collaboration to amplify 91˿Ƶ’s impact on a global scale.”

The Global Engagement team extends heartfelt gratitude to all participants — especially the diplomats and consular representatives whose presence enriched the dialogue, and the 91˿Ƶ scholars who generously shared their expertise and inspired new avenues for collaboration.

Following the Connector Series, guests joined 91˿Ƶ’s annual International Students Welcome Reception, where the newest members of 91˿Ƶ’s international student body were celebrated alongside our diplomatic partners.

Looking ahead, the Connector Series will continue as a recurring platform to spotlight other areas of 91˿Ƶ excellence and to foster dialogue with international stakeholders. Future editions will highlight contributions from the arts, humanities, and social sciences, as well as Indigenous education and studies, ensuring that the series reflects the full breadth of 91˿Ƶ’s strengths and expertise.

By convening minds for global impact, 91˿Ƶ is building the partnerships and collaborations that will shape a better, more connected future.
