This contentious overlap between Han and Mongol communities pos ed fundamental problems in governance for imperial Japan as it expanded in to the region. In response\, Japanese militarists and Mongol leaders conve rged on a radical solution in 1932: Demarcating an autonomous territory fo r minority peoples in Manchukuo fifteen years before such zones would exis t in the People’s Republic of China. In this talk\, Sakura Christmas explo res the fraught delineation of this autonomous territory as not only ethni c\, but also environmental in kind. In the 1930s\, Japanese authorities re located indigenous inhabitants and cultivated a pastoral ecology in Kingġa n Province to reinforce corresponding identities. They viewed seasonal mig ration and native livestock as obstacles to economic autarky under fascist imperialism. Under the banner of 'improvement\,' they introduced engineer ed breeds to settle Mongol herders and maximize output\, which led to land degradation under the conditions of total war. The disastrous consequence s call into question the underlying purpose of 'improvement' heralded by a gricultural science.\n DTSTART:20260408T200000Z DTEND:20260408T220000Z LOCATION:EDUC 120\, Education Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1Y2\, 370 0\, rue McTavish SUMMARY:Research Talk: Fascist Sheep: Land and Livestock in Inner Mongolia under Japanese Rule URL:/global-chinese-studies/channels/event/research-ta lk-fascist-sheep-land-and-livestock-inner-mongolia-under-japanese-rule-372 881 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
