This roundtable will explore the relationsh ip between language\, language policy\, language standards\, translation a nd access to justice in an increasingly linguistically diverse world. It w ill tackle this relationship from both an intralingual and an interlingual perspective.\n\nIn terms of intralingual translation\, where and under wh ich conditions should complex legal language be converted into plain langu age to help people understand and exercise their rights? How does the exis tence of language varieties (e.g.\, different dialects of the Cree languag e) and standards affect access to justice?\n\nThe focus of the discussion will then move to interlingual translation. Providing legal information to people in their language of choice is key not only to ensuring full acces s to the justice system\, but also to making case law more broadly availab le to legal professionals in other jurisdictions. In particular\, English translations by the Société québécoise d’information juridique (SOQUIJ) of judgments rendered in French by Quebec courts will be discussed\, as will their impact on public legal literacy and the development of jurisprudenc e across the country.\n\nCome join us and our distinguished panel of exper ts on June 30 as we reflect on the role of linguistic diversity in the adm inistration of justice and the protection and advocacy of individual right s.\n\nGuest Speakers:\n\n- Rute Costa\, Associate Professor and Head of th e Linguistics Centre\, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa\n\n- Sebastian Drude\, Director\, Vigdís International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultur al Understanding\n\n- Donald Nicholls\, Director of Justice and Correction al Services\, Cree Nation Government\n\n- Vera Roy\, Legal Translator\, So ciété québécoise d’information juridique\n\nRespondents: \n\n- James Archi bald\, Senior Faculty Lecturer\, Translation Studies\, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ\n \n- Vincent Forray\, Director and Associate Professor\, Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law | Faculty of Law\, 91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ Universi ty\n\n91Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ virtual campus tour: Leacock Building\n\n \n\n*Space is limit ed to 50 persons.
