Sustainability and Synthetic Biology Conference, April 11

The 4th edition of the Sustainability and Synthetic Biology Conference will take place on April 11. The event will feature BIEN 580 students Case Study Projects that apply synthetic biology to solve real-world problems in health, food security and the environment, as well as guest speakers who will showcase cutting-edge academic research and innovative startups. The conference provides a professional forum for joining undergraduate and graduate students to gain visibility and receive feedback from peers and experts in the fields of biology and engineering.

Synthetic Biology is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field focused on creating new biological molecules, devices, and systems, as well as repurposing existing ones for beneficial applications in gene therapies, sustainable materials, and food production. Grounded in principles of standardization, abstraction, and modularity, it applies the Design-Build-Test-Learn engineering cycle to address long-standing biological challenges.

Phoela Health Inc., co-founded by Reza Abbasi, PhD, and Prof. Sebastian Wachsmann-Hogiu, has won the Emerging Start-Up Award at the ADRIQ Gala 2025. We are thrilled to announce that 91˿��Ƶ iGEM has been named the 2025 Grand Prize Winner of the international iGEM competition!

Selected as the #1 iGEM team among 195 participating undergraduate institutions worldwide, 91˿��Ƶ iGEM has once again brought home a first-place award after previously securing the top spot in 2023. This achievement places 91˿��Ƶ iGEM among a group of only four teams globally to have won the Grand Prize more than once.

New 600-level course Advanced Materials in Chemical Engineering

The department is offering a new core graduate course starting this winter (W2022). The course is titled "Advanced Materials in Chemical Engineering" (CHEE 688), and will be co-taught by Prof. Noémie-Manuelle Dorval Courchesne and Prof. Reghan Hill. The course will cover a range of fundamental and applied concepts related to materials engineering, with a focus on topics of interest in chemical engineering. These concepts will be applied to inorganic materials, nanostructured materials, soft matter and polymers, and biological materials.

We are proud of Ulrich Legrand, Co-Founder and Technical Director of Electro Carbon, who after completing his PhD and a postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. Jean-Luc Meunier, became an entrepreneur and won the Mitacs Environmental Entrepreneurship Award for his technology that transforms CO2, responsible for greenhouse gases (GHGs), into a commercial product.
