Phoela Health Inc., co-founded by Reza Abbasi, PhD, and Prof. Sebastian Wachsmann-Hogiu, has won the Emerging Start-Up Award at the ADRIQ Gala 2025. Phoela’s biosensing technology was developed during Abbasi's PhD and advanced in his postdoctoral research in 91˿Ƶ’s Department of Bioengineering, mentored and financially supported by 91˿Ƶ Engine’s Chwang Seto Innovation Fellowship Program.

The Golden Violin Award was established in 2006 by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, a year after he donated $20 million to 91˿Ƶ’s Schulich School of Music. Made of pewter and gold plate, the Golden Violin remains on permanent display in 91˿Ƶ’s Marvin Duchow Music Library. This year marks the monumental 20th edition of the Golden Violin Award.

Starting Dec. 10, Australia will become the first country in the world to ban the use of social media platforms by those who are under 16. The goal is to protect the young from cyber-bullying, grooming and exposure to harmful content. The onus will be on the social media companies to enforce the ban.

91˿Ƶ researchers have identified a brain function that helps explain why childhood stress raises metabolic health risks for some women later in life.

A new study found that variations in the brain’s insulin receptor network affect how women respond to early-life adversity. This effect has a lesser impact in men, suggesting there is a sex-specific process at play.

It was a privilege to learn about this field and Dr. MacDougall’s work that all present enjoyed!
