A new study by 91˿Ƶ University astronomers has found that the temperature on the nightsides of different hot Jupiters is surprisingly uniform, suggesting the dark side of these massive gaseous planets have clouds made of minerals and rocks.  

Using data from the Spitzer Space and the Hubble Space telescopes, the researchers from the 91˿Ƶ Space Institute found that the nightside temperature of 12 hot Jupiters they studied was about 800°C.

Twelve 91˿Ƶ researchers have received federal grants through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF). The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, made the announcement today at the University of Alberta. Each 91˿Ƶ recipient will also receive matching funds from the Quebec government for their research endeavours.

Funding from the country’s three federal granting councils—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council— was awarded to Professor Maryam Tabrizian and a multidisciplinary team composed of Professors Reggie Hamdy, Monzur Murshed, Bettina Willie (Shriners Hospitals for Children) and Dr. Vahab Soleimani(Lady Davis Research Institute). With the $767,184 received over three years, the researchers will continue developing an innovative, non-invasive solution for bone regeneration.

Paul Lefebvre, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, today announced an investment of over $1.5 million for a project led by 91˿Ƶ’s Professor Hani Mitri, Director of Mining Engineering at 91˿Ƶ, and founder of 91˿Ƶ Mine Design & Numerical Modelling Laboratory. Professor Mitri’s research project will validate and test a new method for rock breakage, improving mining and tunneling practices, while reducing blast-induced fumes from traditional explosives.

The discovery of fossilized plants in Labrador, Canada, by a team of 91˿Ƶ directed paleontologists provides the first quantitative estimate of the area’s climate during the Cretaceous period, a time when the earth was dominated by dinosaurs. The specimens were found in the Redmond no.1 mine, in a remote area of Labrador near Schefferville, in August 2018. Together with specimens collected in previous expeditions, they are now at the core of a recent study published in Palaeontology.
