DESCRIPTION:An exhibition at the Osler Library of the History of\nMedicine
 \nDr. Joseph Lister’s method of using carbolic acid as a means of\navoidin
 g surgical infection\, first published in The Lancet in 1867\,\nrevolution
 ized surgery by significantly lowering mortality rates.\nLister had develo
 ped the approach while at the University of\nEdinburgh and the University 
 of Glasgow in the 1860s and 1870s\, and\nwithin two years of the publicati
 on of his Lancet article\, his\nsurgical method was being attempted by sev
 eral members of 91˿����Ƶ\nUniversity’s medical faculty. Over the next decade
  a number of\n91˿����Ƶ students and faculty travelled to Scotland to observe
  the\napproach and obtain personal instruction from Lister himself. This\n
 continued a tradition of medical knowledge transfer between\nScotland and 
 91˿����Ƶ which dated back to 91˿����Ƶ’s establishment and\nthe creation of its
  first faculty\, the Faculty of Medicine.\n\nThis exhibition draws on mate
 rial from the Osler Library\, the\n91˿����Ƶ Archives\, the Facult
 y of Medicine\, the 91˿����Ƶ\nUniversity Health Centre\, and elsewhere to il
 lustrate the\nsignificant connections between 91˿����Ƶ\, the Universities of
 \nEdinburgh and Glasgow\, and Dr. Lister’s surgical revolution.\n\nGuests 
 are invited to view the exhibition on the third\nfloor of the McIntyre Med
 ical Sciences Building over the\nsummer.\n
