DESCRIPTION:Patrice Voss: Cross-modal plasticity in blindness. A CRBLM\nsym
 posium\nAbstract:\nThe scientific literature has grown rich in research\ni
 llustrating the remarkable ability of the brain to reorganize\nitself foll
 owing sensory loss. This talk will cover much of the\nwork we have underta
 ken working with blind individuals in an\nattempt to better understand not
  only the behavioral consequences\nof blindness but also its impact on bra
 in function and\norganization. From a behavioral perspective\, this will p
 articularly\ntouch on the spatial hearing abilities as well as the\npitch/
 spectral processing abilities of the blind which are\ngenerally found to b
 e superior to what is observed in sighted\nindividuals. I will present a s
 eries of findings that strongly\nsuggest that these abilities are largely 
 dependent on the\norganization of\, and the functions carried out within\,
  visually\ndeafferented occipital structures.\nBio\nPatrice Voss received 
 his PhD degree in psychology in 2009 from\nthe University of Montreal\, wo
 rking under the supervision of Dr\nFranco Lepore.  He is currently a McGil
 l post-doctoral\nresearcher working with Dr Robert Zatorre at the MNI and 
 BRAMS.\nUsing several brain imaging tools (fMRI\, DTI\, VBM) and several\n
 behavioral variables (sound localization\, pitch and melody\ndiscriminatio
 n)\, his research aims to identify the functional and\nanatomical correlat
 es of enhanced auditory and tactile abilities\nobserved in blind individua
 ls\, and to better ascertain the specific\nimpact of the age of onset of b
 lindness on both the brain and\nbehavioral adaptations.\n
